All sites were checked the second week of April 1998 to verify they were all operable. However, due to the dynamic nature of the Internet, some of these sites may move or disappear. Internet sites are being added at the rate of thousands and thousands PER DAY!!! Traffic on popular sites may be overwhelming for some site owners and some sites are temporarily closed or even removed from time to time. Others will certainly be added, and we will offer an expanded list in the near future. Don't be put off by the somewhat mundate and boring names of many of these sites. They are chock full of valuable and ofter hard to find information!! Many of these sites listed here are linked to other sites that will provide access to even more valuable information. You will discover literally thousands of pages, all over the world. In this material you will find many, many links to resources for information that are accessible through the Internet. These resources can be used to track down phone numbers, e-mail addresses, credit information, personal records (like DMV records, armed forces records and Social Security information among others), and much more. The vast majority of the sites are free, though a few are links to investigative agencies that may charge for their services. Best of Luck in your explorations. ________________________________ (1) After you have found a site that interests you, you may want to enter data and search the database on that site. On your first attempt enter the most specific information possible. If this search provides no results, try being less specific; i.e. search for "B. Jones" instead of "Bill Jones" or "William Jones". First initial or a nickname may list them, and this search will turn up a "B. Jones", "Bill Jones", "William Jones" and more. Tip: Always try the most specific search first and then broaden the search if you don't find what you're looking for. If you get a message like "Site not Found" - first make sure the URL is exactly as it appears on our list. If that doesn't help, try gradually deleting the path name. Example:
Occasionally, a site will be restructured and using this method this will get you to a place where you can begin to explore the site. (even if the specific link no longer exists) Be sure to bookmark the new site address. If the message is something like "server not responding", try it again a few minutes later, or the next day. Sometimes heavy Internet traffic or server problems will cause a site to be slow or unavailable. Sometimes a popular site reaches thier "quota" on thier server and you will need to try it a day or so later. To those who think you can find everything on the net:: If your question is very, very specific and it is related to pop culture, computer science, or the government, you have a very good chance of finding what you want. Brute force search engines and the vast, unindexed bulk of the Internet's information stores conspire against more thoughtful questions though. The solution, of course, is to be very tenacious and follow strings until they prove of no value. Digital Equipment announced that the Alta Vista Index hit 30 million pages and Excite's search engine has 50 million. The problem with all of this is that it scrupulously follows Sturgeon's Law: "Ninety percent of everything is crap." There are at least four national phone directories on the Net (www.switchboard.com for example), and anyone who can glean a bit of information about you can probably complete the picture by turning to one of these sources. If you want to try something interesting, try searching for your own name using a Web search engine and see what comes back. You might be unpleasantly surprised! We know of a recent case about a woman who searched her name and found that a hacker had been posting unsavory messages from her on a newsgroup.
